What is a dental bridge?
If you have a missing tooth, whether it is the front or back tooth, a dental bridge may be a good treatment option for you. The bridge needs at least two crowns and a pontic, or artificial tooth, in the middle for a complete 3 units. Some bridges require more units but typically 3 units is popular for replacing just one missing tooth. A dental bridge is a relatively faster treatment option because it only requires the chair time for preparation of the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth, and the time needed at the dental laboratory. It normally involves two appointments to our office. Overall, a dental bridge is quite similar to a crown preparation, except you have two or more units to prepare, rather than one unit.
How do I take care of the dental bridge if they are all connected in one piece?
The bridge is a long span comprised of 3 units, all connected together. You cannot floss the bridge like you do with other teeth. That’s why you need a floss threader to lead the floss, looping underneath the artificial tooth of the bridge so that you can get all the food and bacteria out from underneath. If you need our staff to demonstrate the technique, please do not hesitate to ask.
